OpenAI have announced they are working on a search facility that will be introduced into their ChatGPT tool in the near future.
You can currently sign up on a waiting list to be given access to this new feature once it is ready.
This new search facility could have implications on Google. When ChatGPT was first launched Alphabet investors (Alphabet owns Google) were concerned that they could lose market share.
That didn’t pan out that way but now with the impending launch of SearchGPT this now looks like this will happen.
OpenAI have said that SearchGPT is still in the early stages but they are promising that searches will be more natural and progressive.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X “We think there is room to make search much better than it is today,”
Google, back in May, launched AI overview which they said was the biggest thing to happen in search for more than 25 years. This didn’t go down well with users as there were some bad results from the searches.

ChatGPT
OpenAI first launched ChatGPT in November 2022. Chatgpt is a large language model chatbot developed by OpenAI.
Essentially, it’s a computer program designed to engage in conversation with humans in a comprehensive and informative way. It can provide summaries of factual topics or create stories.
ChatGPT 5
OpenAI have said that they will release a new version of ChatGPT possibly this year or maybe early 2025. Currently ChatGPT and SearchGPT are separate entities however I am pretty sure that they will want them combine them at some point and we might see that happen in ChatGPT 5.
Google has dominated the search market since 1998 although it wasn’t until around 2000 that is became popular.
Google has a substantial advantage over SearchGPT in terms of infrastructure, data, and resources. Google has also been investing heavily in AI for years and have a proven track record of adapting to challenges.
So even if SearchGPT proves to be popular with users it will be some time before it would seriously contend with Google for the to spot in the search market.
